What is scalp micropigmentation?
Scalp micropigmentation has been around since the 90’s, however has only finally gained recognition in the last 5 years. Scalp micropigmentation goes by many names including: SMP, Tricopigmentation, Hair follicle simulation and scalp hair tattoo. Regardless of the name, the treatment is the same. Scalp micropigmentation consists of using a fine tattoo needle that is the same shape and size as a hair follicle to implant pigment into the scalp. The scalp contains approximately 1000 hair follicles per square inch, and thus the SMP artist tattoo thousands of microdots into the scalp, which gives the appearance of a freshly shaved head of hair or a Buzzcut. The results look very natural and the procedure leaves no signs of scarring. SMP can replace or even be a great adjunct treatment to hair transplants.
Why would I want scalp micropigmentation?
The effecting of balding in both sexes, male and female, can have devastating consequences on one’s self-esteem, self-confidence, sexuality and body image. Many clients feel embarrassed about thinning hair, bald spots or other forms of baldness and have sought out many “cures” for baldness including: hair growth serums, hair transplants, hair growth shampoos and conditioners, hair plugs etc only to be very disappointed with the result or lack thereof. By having an SMP treatment you can easily have the look of a freshly shaved head or buzzcut rather than looking completely or partially bald. The appearance of this look is bold, confident and daring. SMP has shown to increase one’s confidence and self-esteem and given a new look outlook on life.
What about scalp scars?
SMP SC can be used to camouflage scarring from an FUE or FUT hair transplant and can be used to help add density to an area that may have left an area too thin after having a hair transplant. Our SMP SC procedure can also camouflage scars from scalp surgery or other scalp injuries.
Does having an SMP treatment hurt?
The needles and techniques used in SMP are not the same as have a body tattoo treatment using ink. Tattoo artists use ink rather than pigment and they go much deeper into the dermis to implant the ink which causes more pain. Most clients describe having an SMP treatment as having multiple mosquito bites. Medical grade numbing cream to numb scalp as much as possible is used to reduce pain and irritation from the treatment.
What types of treatments do you offer?
We offer 3 types of SMP treatments which covers all types of client issues and concerns.
SMP (Scalp Micropigmentation
The treatment is also called scalp tattoo, hair tattoo, hair follicle simulation or Tricopigmentation. This treatment gives our clients or any gender the appearance of a shaved head of hair or a buzzcut. The process is to apply thousands of simulated hair follicles to the scalp.
SMP HD (Hair Density)
This treatment is similar in application to SMP however this procedure is for men and woman who have a good amount of hair but find that their hair is thin or thinning. By applying thousands of pigmented hair follicles to the scalp we darken the scalp enough to cover the thinning hair or bald spot and give the appearance of a fuller denser head of hair.
SMP SC (Scar Camouflage)
This treatment requires skill and experience to perform this procedure. Scars are not the same as regular epithelial tissue. If you have had medical scalp surgery or have received a scar due to an accident or have had a hair transplant in the past and need to camouflage then SMP SC is perfect for you.)
What types of balding can SMP help with?
SMP can help regain you confidence and self-esteem for any type of balding the most common being:
Semi or complete baldness
Thinning hair for men and women
Hair transplant scars
Accident or injury related scars
What about men and women with thinning hair?
Our SMP HD treatment work for both men and woman of any age, skin tpe and skin colour and works at any stage of baldness. Many men and women come into the office with thinning hair in the top or crown area of the scalp. SMP HD works to create the appearance of density in the scalp by camouflaging the scalp with thousands of mircodots. This effect creates hair density and fullness, giving the appearance of a full head of hair.
How long does an SMP treatment last?
Depending on your age, immune system, metabolism etc an SMP treatment can last anywhere between 1-3 years before ever needing a touch up. We, nor ANY provider can guarantee how long the SMP treatment will last because everybody is different and no one can estimate how long the pigmented dots will last before needing a touch up. However with proper aftercare (ie: application of sunscreen etc) SMP will last many years. We also offer a 12 month guarantee against fading.
